RSS in Education

Now that AEBSD has jumped on the Google Apps for Education train I plan to discuss apps I use in my personal and professional lives that can change the way you use the Web.  One of those apps is Google Reader which is a RSS reader.  RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and it really is simple.  If you don’t want to take my word for it watch the awesome three minute video RSS In Plain English created by Commoncraft.

I’m sure many of you are asking well I understand what it is, but should I really waste my valuable time setting it up?  The answer is YES and this is why.

  1. Saves Time: All educators are looking for ways to be more productive.  There is never enough time in the day, and you can always do more.  That is the nature of education.  This tool that will save you considerable time because all of the content (websites) you normally take time going to will now come to you.  In rural Alaska this is a HUGE benefit.  With Internet speeds barely above dial-up this will greatly improve your productivity!
  2. Organization: Google Reader allows you to create folders to organize your delivered content.  With the pressures of prepping for various subjects let this tool relieve some of that pressure.  It will deliver content to you in an organized fashion.
  3. Sharing: Did you find a piece of information that you would like to share with a colleague or your students?  Sharing could not be easier.  You are able to share via email or a more advanced method by a publicly viewable RSS feed.

Now that you know what Google Reader is and the advantages of using it lets begin setting up your reader.  Use the video below to assist you in Getting Started with Google ReaderNote: Use your school district provided login credentials when setting up your reader.

As always if you hit a snag in setting it up feel free to contact me!
