VoiceThread Mobile for iOS

25 Jul

One of my favorite collaborative tools for the classroom is VoiceThread.  Their site explains the service as:

“A VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate slides and leave comments in 5 ways – using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam). Share a VoiceThread with friends, students, and colleagues for them to record comments too.Users can doodle while commenting, use multiple identities, and pick which comments are shown through moderation. VoiceThreads can even be embedded to show and receive comments on other websites and exported to MP3 players or DVDs to play as archival movies. ”

The exciting news is that they are launching an iOS Mobile App in the Fall.  Their goal of the app is “We want to serve the needs of a person with dyslexia or ADHD, an outdoor classroom with mobile devices, a user in the developing world without high-speed internet, a kindergartner, or an elderly lifelong learner.”

No dates have been announced for the official launch, but you can find out more information on their website!

I have used VoiceThread for a course and I would be very interested in trying it in a mobile outdoor setting. I can imagine picking a location and having students going there asynchronously and leaving thoughts and reflections.

I am also excited for students to have more flexibility in using VoiceThread! I always love it when students have learning experiences outside the walls of their classrooms to show that learning has no boundaries!

I haven’t used VoiceThread before, but I would love to! I think there are so many ways for kids to be creative with this and for teachers to be able to facilitate learning. The fact that VoiceThread is coming up with a mobile app gives it the opportunity to be even more effective. I think Kae’s idea is a great one…having students use it in an outdoor setting where they can leave their thoughts and reflections would be a great project.

I highly suggest using VoiceThread in your classroom if you haven’t done so before. It is a great tool to facilitate asynchronous discussions.

I have used Voicethread with a number of grade levels for a variety of projects. It’s a great tool and I’m excited to hear that they are putting out a mobile version…my wheels are already turning with a number of ideas of how to use it outdoors and in other places where mobile devices can best be utilized. Thanks for spreading the news!

This is so exciting. I’ve only used Voicethread a couple of times for my classes here at Boise State, but this would be an excellent way to stop putting off trying it in the classroom! Thanks for sharing!
