School Filtering Policy?

One of the constant challenges being a network administrator in schools is working with and creating filtering policies.  I  remember reading a blog post a couple of years ago written by Dr. Barbara Schroeder asking the Boise Schools to change their filtering policies.

The topic I would like to explore: should blogging, social networking and video sites, along with other potentially collaborative web based sites (e.g. Google Docs) be open to students in school?

    I do feel that all of the technologies you have listed should be open for student use. However I do feel that students using these need to be closely monitored. But they offer so many valuable additions to the classroom that it is silly not to use them. As long as students understand how to use them responsibly then I say let them be open.

    Luke, I go back and forth on this one. Clearly there are some things that should be filtered – things that we know children shouldn’t be accessing anyway. But there are a lot of things that get overfiltered, when we should be teaching our children to be better consumers of the media.

    For example, I always recommend school’s filter Blogger. I generally recommend they filter WordPress. I never recommend they filter Edublogs.

    I think this is a great question and I don’t think there’s an easy answer to it! The filter is something that our technology department and teachers/administrators are constantly battling over. Our default server, which is what our students log into, has essentially every social media and streaming site blocked. Even Flickr creative commons is blocked. It leaves teachers who want to teach students how to responsibly use these kinds of sites very frustrated. There are times when I feel like there are so many things students could be doing with technology and so many learning experiences they could be getting that they’re not because it’s blocked. How do you teach students to become digital citizens and still keep them safe when they’re in the school environment? I don’t have the answer to this.
